I choose a cnc router as my main cnc milling machine since they offer a large work envelope and a fast spindle on a small footprint, and I usually don’t need the rigidity of a vertical machining center.
The spindle was chosen because there is also a manual toolchange spindle with the same frame size and motor data that uses HSK tooling and can act as a drop-in replacement.
This is my general layout on the machine – Two Garant Xtric self-centering vises in front that always stay on the machine. Tool length probe on the back left corner and either a three-jaw chuck or a magnet chuck on the right rear corner of the table. This gives me a lot of flexibility, and if needed the whole table is cleared in short order to do plate work.
